A Study of the NCRB REPORT, 2021 with Relation to the Crimes in India


1. Crime against women

According to the NCRB report, there was a 40% increase in crimes against women, but only 31% of Indian Penal Code cases were charged. Delhi recorded 13,892 cases of crimes against women, an alarming increase of more than 40% compared to 2020. According to the report, two minor girls were raped in Delhi every day in 2021, making it India’s most dangerous metropolitan city for women. The most cases of such crimes were recorded under the category of ‘Cruelty by Husband or His Relatives’ (31.8%), followed by ‘Assault on Women with Intent to Outrage her Modesty’ (20.8%). The states with the most cases were Uttar Pradesh (56,083), Rajasthan (40,738), and Maharashtra (39,526).

2. Crime against children

Under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 36.05% of 1,49,404 cases of crime against children were registered in 2021, with Uttar Pradesh recording the highest number of cases (7,129), followed by Maharashtra (6,200), Madhya Pradesh (6,070), and Tamil Nadu (4,465).

Sikkim had the highest rate of sexual offences against children in the state category, with 48.6%, followed by Kerala (28.1%), Meghalaya (27.8%), and Haryana (24.7%). In 2021, Delhi had the highest rate of crimes against children among Union Territories. Under the Child Labour Act, 982 cases were registered in 2021 with the highest number in Telangana (305) followed by Assam.

In 2021, 1,062 cases were registered under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act, with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Assam being the top three states.


3. Murder Cases

When it comes to murder cases, India has seen an increase since last year's total of 29,272 cases. In the State category, Uttar Pradesh had the most murder cases (3,717), followed by Bihar (2,799) and Maharashtra (2,330). Sikkim had the least amount of murder cases i.e. 14. The main motivations for these murders, according to the report, were disputes (9,765 cases), vendetta (3,782 cases), and gain (1,692 cases). Last year, Delhi had the highest number of murder cases (454), while Kozhikode had the lowest number of murder cases i.e. 5.


4. Suicide cases

At the national level, the number of Suicide cases increased by 7.17%. Daily wage earners remained the most common profession among suicide victims, accounting for 25.6%. (42,004 suicides). The number of suicides in the daily wage group increased by 11.52% during this period, which is higher than the national average. Maharashtra had the highest number of suicides with 22,207, followed by Tamil Nadu (18,925), Madhya Pradesh (14,956), and West Bengal (13,500). Delhi had the highest number of suicides in the Union Territory category, with 2,840.


5. Drug abuse cases

Under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), Punjab had the most cases filed. The report showed that Himachal Pradesh was second on the list in the state category. According to the report, the Union Territory of Dadar and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu had the lowest crime rate under the Act (0.5%), followed by the states of Gujarat (0.7%) and Bihar (1.2%).


6. Unlawful activities

In 2021, 814 cases were registered under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), compared to 796 cases in 2020, and 76 cases of sedition were registered.
